This morning, the studio was alive with colour, laughter, and creativity as a busload of students from Kuluin OHSC joined us for a two-hour drawing workshop. From the very first activity, it was clear this was going to be a fun and imaginative session!
We started with some playful drawing games and activities designed to spark new ideas and loosen up the creative flow. The students really embraced the challenge, coming up with some incredible character designs — from pizza-inspired people to Minecraft characters and even a few favourite Pokémon. The range of ideas showed just how imaginative young artists can be when given the freedom to explore.
Once the characters were sketched out, students moved on to creating a finished piece of artwork. Some chose to use watercolours, experimenting with blending and brushwork, while others brought their characters to life with bold marker drawings.
For me, one of the highlights was watching the students share their ideas and encourage one another throughout the morning. There was a real sense of collaboration and joy in the room, and I’m certain the kids enjoyed it as much as I did.
Workshops like this remind me why I love teaching art — it’s all about giving students the tools and confidence to bring their ideas to life, while having fun in the process.
